I have recently purchased a 6 foot Farm King box scraper for my 790.On the rear 3 pt arms...I have lateral float option, by moving 2 pins....When using the box scraper....do I want lateral float in place or not.????

We've got the same scrapper, but different lift arms I think. I don't believe there is a lateral float on my ford 1710. There was a discussion here some months back on exactly the same subject. I don't remember the conclusion, but the thread probably is in the archives. The answer probably is that it depends on what you want to do, and I'd try it both ways to see what works best. Thinking it through, it seems like without float would be best if the object is to cut down small bumps that don't run the entire width of the blade. If the float was on, one side of the blade would come up and the other pitch down. The float wouldn't necessarily provide an increased cut where the bump is and might increase the cut at the other end of the blade where a cut isn't wanted. Float on probably is best for maintaining a road without re-grading it. ....

I've played with both ways on my 790 and I think it has to do with the surface you're on. If it's already pretty flat then the locked position will work well. If it's pretty uneven the box will follow the tractors contorsions and may dig in/gouge the surface excessively. In those conditions I've had good luck with the float position. I also replace the cotter pins with hitch pins to make the changeover easier. Hope this helps, Rob. ....

If I understand the question correctly, you always want those pins in when using any implement. The lateral float is for connecting and removing implements. You dont' want the 3pt hitch banging against your rear tiers while in service.

The term "lateral float" used by JD is somewhat misleading. The vertical slots in the lift links of the 3 PH actually provide "torsional or rotational float" of the implement with respect to the tractor. This is to allow the implement to follow ground contours independent of the roll of the tractor. Lateral motion of the hitch with respect to the tractor is really controlled by the adjustable check chains (or on some tractors there are adjustable bars). When using a box blade or utility blade, I get the best results with the "lateral float" enabled. ....

I have a JD 1070 and I always leave it setup so it allows the "lateral" motion. For the most part, tools work better if they are a bit loose. I've found this to be the case particuilarly when using a field mower and box scraper. The only reason I can see to fix the motion would be for finish work wher you are trying to level off a cut. ....
